Overview

The Galileo mission was a NASA spacecraft that explored Jupiter and its moons from 1995 to 2003, providing unprecedented insights into the planet's atmosphere, magnetic field, and moons. The mission was named after the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei, who first observed Jupiter's moons in 1610. The spacecraft was launched on October 18, 1989, and arrived at Jupiter on December 7, 1995, after a six-year journey. During its eight-year mission, Galileo discovered new moons, observed volcanic eruptions on Io, and studied the planet's magnetic field and radiation belts.
